The Adjustments That Follow

The weighted score is then multiplied by several modifiers, and the result shows you exactly which ones fired:

  • Regional tolerance. An area that rarely sees snow gets a large upward adjustment; a well-equipped snowbelt district gets a large downward one. This single factor explains most of the difference between two towns getting the same storm.
  • Precipitation type. If precipitation is forecast right at freezing with little accumulation, the odds rise steeply — that is ice, and ice is worse than snow. If it is simply falling as rain, the odds collapse.
  • Storm timing. The hourly forecast is checked to see how much of the snow falls before 8am. A storm that peaks overnight and into the commute is far more disruptive than the same total arriving at lunchtime.
  • Compound hazards. Heavy snow plus high gusts, or severe cold plus wind, are worse together than either alone, so both combinations add a multiplier.
